HS in Neural Diseases

We are studying 2 aspects of the involvement of neural HS in disease processes - namely its interactions with the Alzheimer precursor protein (APP) and with prion proteins (responsible for Transmissible Spongiform Encaphalopathies - TSEs, including BSE in cows and new variant CJD in humans). There is evidence that the pathology of these diseases involves HS as a component of the protein plaques which form and damage the brain. A better understanding of the functional roles of HS may open up new therapeutic possibilities for these diseases.
