The behavioural and ecological physiology research group is currently focused on investigating the physiology, energetics and behaviour of a range of aquatic birds. Species currently under investigation include barnacle geese, macaroni, little and king penguins, great cormorants and black-browed albatrosses.

These studies are conducted both in the lab at the University of Birmingham, and in the field at Crozet, South Georgia, Svalbard, Australia, and Brazil.

Our group pioneered the use of implantable heart rate data loggers to obtain long-term metabolic rate estimates of free-ranging animals.

Previously, members of the group have studied tufted ducks, south-georgian shags, common eiders and gentoo penguins, as well as fur seals, marine iguanas and the brown trout.
